Two things I would tell you: first, the prize is not on earth. Suffering is part of life, but surely people like you make that suffering easier for those around them. How we live, and surely how we suffer, on earth will determine whether we receive those promises from God. Second, he is always with us, every one of us, chasing us and trying to win our hearts. We cannot receive his graces and his peace without putting for the effort to meet him. That sometimes means giving up drugs, alcohol or a cause we have no control of. If these people you love deary refuse to turn to him, he will not help them. Sometimes it means slowing down, looking deep inside at our own pain and sitting through God's surgery as he heals us. It is painful. If you beleive in the Bible and the Resurrection of Christ, you mustn't lose hope, because his promises he will keep. There is always good somewhere, in everything and in everyone. That is where God resides. I don't know you and I don't know if that helps at all. I just see someone with a lot of heart and I pray you can feel some peace.

I agree. I think of the verse that says that the goodness of God leads to repentance. It's refreshing in a strange sort of way to read your blog. Thanks for being an encouragement to me.

Haha. The only problem with that idea is I've heard from more than one of these guys that they don't trust anyone who helps people for their job. If I was getting paid to help them they wouldn't trust me. Maybe you could just make anonymous donations to a good cause?

Maybe you should become a Drug Counselor. At least then you would get paid for your time.

Sure is hard for me to understand why you would willingly choose to live in the middle of gang city. But I guess it keeps it exciting.

Jesus seemed to talk about the kingdom of God in a couple of ways: as a future place, and as a thing happening right now in and through his people as we live our lives. In that 2nd sense I believe we are light in dark communities and to people who have been overwhelmed by darkness in their lives. Jesus' mustard seed metaphor suggests that though we feel ineffective and inconsequential, we are in fact doing his work, acting as his agents, planting seeds of light (and life) where none existed before.

But the reality is that we do this work in a time that is darkened by sin and all of its terrible destructiveness. The darkness does push against us, but if the Holy Spirit in fact lives in us as Jesus promised, he is a powerful and inextinguishable light.

Paul put it this way: "But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." 2 Cor. 4:7

Life is a struggle. I greatly appreciate your honesty, Hannah.

Hannah, I'm sorry I disappeared for a while. I was having some major issues (and moved). I would love to talk with you. My email is jeremy_light@live.com I found this site on the internet that says Graeme's death still remains a mystery and is under investigation. Please get back to me.

P.S. The Disadvantaged Pets site is great. That's what Graeme was all about.
